Blue cheese is big on flavor, ranging from earthy to pungent to bitter. Matching blue cheese with wine could be considered an art or a science. Whatever you call it, pairing blue cheese with wine takes a little planning. Because of blue cheese’s strong flavor, a fruity, sweet, perhaps spicy red wine is a good complement. Choose a wine that’s moderate in tannins, such as Malbec, Merlot, Carénčre, Zinfandel or Shiraz.
A Cabernet or Pinot Gris would make a suitable partner for the Blue Stilton® stuffed dates in our Festive Cheese-Stuffed Medjool Dates appetizer.
Pair Quenby Hall Blue Stilton®, Il Villaggio® Gorgonzola and Cantorel® Roquefort with sweet wines like Sauternes, a Moscato, Zinfandel, Tokay or a Ruby or Tawny Port.
Pair Saint Agur® with Sauternes or Graves.
Pair Corazón de Ronda™ Cabrales with Pedro Ximenez sherry.
Pair Rosenborg® Danish Blue with Tawny ports, Sauternes, Muscato d’Asti, Banyuls or a dessert Muscat.
Pair Edelweiss® Blue Brie with champagne, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Shiraz or Grenache.
